When Will Digital Driver's Licences Take Effect?
Jakarta, KOMPAS.com - The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) has officially launched its latest innovation: the digital driver’s licence (SIM). When will the digital SIM take effect for the public?
The digital SIM was unveiled during Korlantas Polri’s Technical Working Meeting (Rakernis) at the STIK Polri complex in Jakarta on Friday, 22 May 2026. The innovation is expected to enhance efficiency for drivers and support the government’s smart mobility ecosystem.
‘Currently, we are strengthening the regulations as several sub-directorates need to be involved,’ Wibowo told Kompas.com during an interview in Jakarta recently.
Regulatory alignment is crucial to prevent confusion among field personnel during checks, as the legal validity of digital documents must have a strong and uniform legal framework across Indonesia.
Wibowo added that Korlantas will soon hold meetings with relevant sub-directorates to ensure both electronic and conventional traffic violation systems can recognise and process the digital SIM. The digital SIM is set to take effect in June 2026.
Despite the tight timeline, Korlantas assured that all supporting infrastructure will be optimised incrementally. The public is urged to be patient as the system undergoes full preparation to ensure a smooth transition from physical to digital licences.
‘Just launched. There are software tools and administrative requirements to be prepared,’ he said.
