JAKARTA — Fundamentally, man was created in a state of tawhid, the affirmation of the oneness of God. Tawhid constitutes the first form of religious belief known to humankind.

Over the course of time, humans began to deviate from this innate disposition (fitrah). This deviation occurred gradually until eventually some people fell into polytheism.

“This is an unquestionable truth,” said the Secretary-General of the World Muslim Scholars Union, Dr Ali Muhammad ash-Shallabi, quoted from his official website on Tuesday (9/9/2026).

He said this view accords with the Quran, the Sunnah, man’s fitrah, and sound reason, in harmony with authentic religious proofs.

Interestingly, similar conclusions have also been reached by a number of archaeologists and religious researchers, both from the West and elsewhere.

He cited several examples, as follows:

  1. Research into the religions of primitive societies

Researcher Addison Huybel, known for his studies of the religions of primitive societies, stated that the era in which early man was thought incapable of conceiving of a wholly sacred God or an almighty God has passed.

According to him, Tylor was mistaken in regarding monotheistic religious thought as the outcome of civilisational progress and the growth of human knowledge.
