When Should Emotional Stress Be Addressed by Professionals? Here Are the Signs
Emotional distress can affect anyone in daily life, whether due to work, social relationships, or personal problems. However, when distress persists and interferes with daily activities, the condition should not be ignored. Clinical psychologist Ratih Ibrahim, M.M., stated that persistent and increasingly severe emotional distress can be a sign that someone needs professional help.
‘Professional help should be considered when a person feels their emotional distress is persisting, and even intensifying to the point of making them overwhelmed and beginning to disrupt daily functioning,’ Ratih said, as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday (6 March 2026).
According to Ratih, unaddressed emotional distress can make it difficult to perform basic life functions. For example, sleep disturbances, difficulty working optimally, or trouble maintaining relationships with people around them.
One common sign is a long-lasting sense of despair. This can cause a person to lose motivation and feel there is no hope for the future. Additionally, a person may experience episodes of anger that are hard to control. This can manifest as sudden anger, excessive crying, or emotional reactions that are out of proportion to the situation faced.
Another sign is a tendency to withdraw socially from the environment. In more serious conditions, emotional distress can also provoke thoughts of harming oneself or others. According to Ratih, these are important signs that someone needs more directed support from professionals.
