The schedule for the first Tarawih prayer in 2026 has been eagerly anticipated by Muslims ahead of the start of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah. The timing of the Tarawih prayer is directly linked to the determination of the first day of fasting, which is decided through astronomical calculation (hisab) or the government's isbat session.

Some Islamic mass organisations have already set the start of Ramadan in advance, whilst the government awaited the results of the isbat session. The following outlines the schedule according to Muhammadiyah and the government's isbat session findings.

Muhammadiyah's Tarawih Schedule

The Central Executive of Muhammadiyah has determined that the start of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah falls on Wednesday, 18 February 2026. This determination is based on the hisab hakiki wujudul hilal method, which serves as the organisation's official guideline.

As the first day of fasting falls on 18 February 2026, the first Tarawih prayer is to be performed on the preceding evening, Tuesday night, 17 February 2026. Accordingly, Muhammadiyah followers may begin performing Tarawih from this evening.

Isbat Session Results for the Start of Ramadan

Meanwhile, the government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, held the isbat session to determine 1 Ramadan 1447 H on the evening of Tuesday, 17 February 2026. According to official information from the Ministry, the isbat session results will determine when fasting begins nationally.

Should the isbat session determine that 1 Ramadan falls on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, the public may perform the first Tarawih prayer on Tuesday evening, 17 February 2026. However, if the start of Ramadan is set one day later, the first Tarawih prayer would instead be performed on Wednesday evening, 18 February 2026.

The public has been urged to await the government's official announcement regarding the isbat session results to confirm the timing of Tarawih prayers and the start of the Ramadan 1447 Hijriah fasting period in accordance with the prevailing determination.
