When is Eid al-Fitr in Australia and the Sultanate of Oman?
Australia’s Fatwa Council has announced that Ramadan 1447 H will end on Thursday, 19 March 2026. Consequently, Friday, 20 March 2026 will be the first day of Eid al-Fitr and the beginning of Shawwal 1447 H.
This decision was made following careful consultation with local and international lunar observatories, using calculations of new moon appearance, moonset, and its visibility across Australia and surrounding regions – a methodology recognised by many leading councils of Islamic scholars worldwide.
The National Imam Council of Australia and the Fatwa Council acknowledge that some scholars and imams may follow alternative methods. They urge the community to respect these differences and work towards unity, preserving shared values and interests.
Grand Mufti of Australia Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad and imam members of the National Imam Council extended warmest Eid al-Fitr greetings to Muslims, according to Gulf News.
They also encouraged Australian residents to remember siblings in Gaza and Palestine in their prayers, donations, and support, and to engage with neighbours and friends to share a peaceful and correct image of Islam.
The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined based on careful calculations of lunar observations, including the appearance of the new moon, its sunset time, and its visibility across Australia and surrounding regions. This method aligns with established global scientific practices, ensuring a consistent and accurate beginning for Shawwal 1447 Hijri whilst honouring the diversity of opinion within the Muslim community.
Meanwhile, Oman has officially announced Eid al-Fitr holidays for employees in the public and private sectors, with leave scheduled from 19 to 23 March 2026, according to an official announcement. The authorities confirmed that work will resume on 24 March after the end of the holiday period.
