Muslim communities in Indonesia are awaiting certainty regarding the date of Eid al-Fitr 1447 AH (Lebaran 2026). Various Islamic organisations and the government employ different methodologies in determining the beginning of the Islamic month, creating the potential for differing dates of celebration.

Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership has already established that 1 Shawwal 1447 AH falls on Friday, 20 March 2026, based on a proclamation detailing the calculations of Muhammadiyah’s Council of Islamic Jurisprudence and Renewal regarding the beginning of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhul-Hijjah. The determination uses the hisab hakiki wujudul hilal method, which calculates the start of the month based on astronomical positioning of the moon.

By contrast, the government through Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Ministry (Kemenag) has not yet formally announced the date of Lebaran 2026. The government will determine the beginning of Shawwal through an isbat session scheduled for 29 Ramadan, corresponding to Thursday, 19 April 2026.

Nevertheless, based on the Islamic calendar compiled by the government, 1 Shawwal 1447 AH is estimated to fall on Saturday, 21 March 2025. The exact date will be confirmed once the government receives moon sighting reports from various monitoring points across Indonesia.

“Lebaran is estimated to be on the 21st,” said Arsad Hidayat, Director of Islamic Religious Affairs and Islamic Law Development at the Religious Affairs Ministry, when met following a discussion at the Ministry’s headquarters on Jalan MH Thamrin, Jakarta, on Monday, 9 March 2026.
