When is Eid al-Fitr 2026? Check Muhammadiyah and Government Schedule for Idul Fitri
Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership (PP) has officially established the date for celebrating Eid al-Fitr 1 Syawal 1447 Hijri. Based on careful calculations using the hisab method, Muhammadiyah members will celebrate Eid earlier than government predictions.
According to Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Statement Number 2/MLM/I.0/E/2025, 1 Syawal 1447 Hijri falls on Friday, 20 March 2026. This determination is based on the criteria of the Global Single Hijri Calendar (KHGT), which resulted from the decision of Muhammadiyah’s Munas Tarjih.
Under this ruling, Muhammadiyah members will perform Eid prayers on Friday morning, 20 March 2026. This certainty provides the public with the opportunity to prepare accommodation for homecoming and holiday needs well in advance.
The potential difference arises because on the evening of 19 March 2026, the crescent moon’s position in Indonesia is estimated to still be below 3 degrees. For the Government and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), which use the MABIMS criteria, this condition requires the month of Ramadan to be completed as 30 days (istikmal).
However, for Muhammadiyah, which uses global criteria, the existence of a crescent moon in other parts of the world (such as the Americas region) is sufficient to mark the entry of a new month simultaneously throughout the world.
