When is Eid al-Fitr 2026? BMKG Hilal Predictions and Religious Affairs Ministry Decree

Indonesian communities are increasingly asking when Eid al-Fitr 2026 will fall as the end of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah approaches. Based on astronomical data from the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), there are strong indications of a difference in the start of Shawwal across the country.

The government, through the Religious Affairs Ministry (Kemenag), is predicted to establish Eid al-Fitr 1447 H on Saturday, 21 March 2026. This is based on analysis of BMKG hilal data when the sun sets on Thursday, 19 March 2026.

In contrast, the Central Leadership (PP) of Muhammadiyah has established through Decree Number 2/MLM/I.0/E/2025 that 1 Shawwal 1447 H or Eid al-Fitr 2026 falls on Friday, 20 March 2026. Muhammadiyah uses the Hisab Hakiki Wujudul Hilal method, whereby mathematically the position of the moon is already above the horizon when the sun sets on 19 March, so the following day is considered the start of the new lunar month.

Based on the Joint Decree of Three Ministers, the government has allocated an extended holiday in March 2026 due to its proximity to Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence.

This difference in dates is expected not to diminish the devotion of Muslims in celebrating this day of victory. Ensure you continue to monitor official announcements from the Religious Affairs Ministry for confirmation of Eid al-Fitr prayer arrangements in your respective regions.

The Ministry of Transportation estimates the number of travellers during this year’s Eid al-Fitr at 143.91 million people (50.6% of the country’s population).
