When Information Is Everywhere, What Should Schools Teach?

In the past, schools were one of the main sources for acquiring knowledge. Textbooks, teachers, and libraries were the places students went to find the information they needed. Today, the situation has changed. All kinds of information can be accessed at any time through the internet, learning videos, social media, and even artificial intelligence (AI). In a matter of seconds, someone can find answers to various questions without having to open a textbook.

This shift raises an interesting question. If information is so easily obtained, what exactly should schools be teaching?

This question is not meant to diminish the role of schools, but rather to invite us to see that the function of education continues to evolve alongside changes in society. From the perspective of curriculum sociology, a curriculum does not stand alone; it is constantly influenced by social developments, scientific progress, technology, and societal needs. When society changes, education must also adapt to remain relevant.

In the information age, the main challenge is no longer limited access to knowledge, but the ability to select correct information, understand its context, and use it responsibly. Not all easily found information is trustworthy. Therefore, critical thinking skills, digital literacy, and ethics in using technology are becoming increasingly important for students to develop.

This does not mean that basic knowledge is no longer important. Reading, writing, arithmetic, and mastery of concepts in various subjects remain the essential foundation of the learning process. However, education today must also help students develop the ability to analyse information, solve problems, and adapt to ongoing changes.

The presence of artificial intelligence is another example of how technology is changing the way people learn. AI can assist in searching for references, explaining concepts, and even providing feedback on work. However, AI cannot replace the human capacity for decision-making, considering values, or understanding complex social situations. This is why schools have a vital role in nurturing these abilities.

It is these changing societal needs that make a fixed curriculum impossible. The curriculum must be continuously evaluated to equip students with competencies relevant to the challenges of their time. The goal is not merely to keep up with technological developments, but to ensure that education prepares a generation ready to face life.

Ultimately, the ease of accessing information does not diminish the importance of schools. On the contrary, amidst the flood of information, the role of schools becomes even greater: to help students learn how to think, not just to remember. Because the aim of education is not only to produce individuals who know many things, but also those who can use that knowledge wisely in their lives.
