When Does the Maximum 13% Airfare Increase Take Effect? Here's What Airlangga Says

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto has revealed that the government’s policy to keep airfare increases in the range of 9%-13% will take effect today. He made this statement to reporters at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy office in Central Jakarta on Monday (6/4/2026). “Yes, starting today,” he said. Previously, Airlangga explained that the price of aviation fuel at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport as of 1 April 2026 had reached Rp 23,551 per litre. This price increase affects the operational cost structure of national airlines, where aviation fuel contributes 40% to aircraft operations. “Therefore, the government is preparing strategic mitigation measures to ensure that ticket prices remain affordable for the public. So, what we are safeguarding is the ticket price,” said Airlangga. He explained that the Ministry of Transportation, on behalf of the government, is raising the fuel surcharge by 10% compared to the 2019 tariff cap figure. “And then it is further adjusted to 38%, which is the same for both jets and propellers. Previously, jets were only 10%, and propellers 25%. Now, everything is adjusted to 38%,” said Airlangga. “To keep the domestic ticket price increase affordable for the public, the government is maintaining the ticket price increase in the range of 9%-13%,” he continued. Furthermore, Airlangga stated that the government is implementing several policies to control ticket price increases, where the PPNDTP is borne by the government at 11% for scheduled commercial air transport tickets in the domestic economy class. “With that calculation, the subsidy we provide is Rp 1.3 trillion per month. We are preparing for two months, so this is Rp 2.6 trillion to ensure the maximum ticket price increase is 9%-13%,” said Airlangga. He also revealed that the policy will be implemented in accordance with the policy package programme announced some time ago. “Thus, we will continue to evaluate whether the geopolitics or the war in the Middle East is still ongoing,” said Airlangga.
