When Does Fasting Begin? Isbat Session to Determine Start of Ramadan 2026 Held Today
The government is holding an isbat session today to determine the start of Ramadan 2026, corresponding to 1447 Hijriah.
As reported by the Public Relations and Communications Bureau of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) and the official Instagram account of the Directorate General of Islamic Community Guidance at Kemenag on Tuesday (17/2/2026), the isbat session will be held at Hotel Borobudur in Central Jakarta. The session will also be broadcast live on the Bimas Islam TV and Kemenag YouTube channels.
The agenda begins at 16:30 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) with a seminar on the position of the hilal (new crescent moon). The isbat session itself will then commence at 18:30 WIB.
The government will subsequently announce the results of the isbat session through a press conference, with the announcement scheduled for 19:05 WIB.
Hilal observation will be conducted at various locations across Indonesia, from Aceh to Papua, involving regional teams and volunteer moon-sighting observers.
To supplement the astronomical calculation data, Kemenag is carrying out hilal observation (rukyatul hilal) at 96 locations spread throughout Indonesia. These observations are being conducted by Kemenag provincial offices and district/city Kemenag offices, in collaboration with Religious Courts, Islamic organisations, and other relevant agencies.
