When a Child's Plate Becomes a National Development Priority
National development is often synonymous with toll roads, skyscrapers, or other large-scale projects. Yet, there is something no less important that actually determines the future of a nation: the quality of its younger generation. One way to create a healthy, intelligent, and productive generation is by ensuring every child receives nutritious food. Lately, the Free Nutritious Meal Programme (MBG) has become a widely discussed policy. This programme indicates that the government is beginning to place children’s basic needs as a vital part of development. In my view, this step deserves appreciation because the issue of nutrition is not merely a health matter, but is also linked to education and Indonesia’s future. Many children still go to school hungry or consume food that inadequately meets their nutritional requirements. As a result, they struggle to concentrate during lessons and cannot follow classes optimally. If this condition persists, the potential these children possess may not develop to its fullest. Therefore, providing nutritious food within the school environment can be a solution that helps them learn more effectively. However, this programme must not focus solely on the distribution of meals. The quality of the food provided must be genuinely scrutinised to ensure children’s nutritional needs are met. Furthermore, the programme’s implementation must be carried out equitably so that children in various regions can experience the same benefits. Without proper management, the noble objectives of this programme could be difficult to achieve. On the other hand, the success of this programme does not rest solely on the government. Parents, schools, and the community also have an important role in building awareness about the importance of healthy eating patterns. Children need to be accustomed to consuming nutritious food from an early age so that the programme’s benefits do not cease once they leave the school grounds. In my opinion, making children’s nutritional needs a priority is the right step. True development is not only about constructing physical facilities, but also about building the people who will manage and utilise that development in the future. When a child’s plate becomes the primary focus, what is being prepared is not just a healthy generation, but a generation capable of leading Indonesia to become a more advanced nation.
