WhatsApp's New Feature Allows Users to Chat with Non-Users
WhatsApp is preparing a new feature that allows users to send messages to people without WhatsApp accounts. The feature, called guest chat, is being tested with selected beta users on Android and iOS.
Through this feature, users can create direct invitation links from the application to start conversations. These links can be opened by anyone, even those without WhatsApp accounts, via mobile phone or desktop browser.
Users who join will be marked as “Guest” in the conversation. However, WhatsApp ensures that end-to-end encryption remains in place, so message content remains private between participants.
There is, however, a risk to consider. Because there is no account verification, anyone with the link could potentially enter the chat.
For this reason, users are advised to be careful when sharing links and to avoid conversations containing sensitive information.
The feature also comes with several limitations. Guest users cannot send photos, videos, documents, or make voice and video calls. Additionally, they cannot join group chats.
Furthermore, conversations are temporary. Chats will automatically be deleted if inactive for 10 days, and users must create a new link to continue communication.
Currently, the feature is still in limited testing and there is no confirmation of when it will be released globally.
WhatsApp has recently launched other updates, including parental-managed accounts for children under 13 years old, as well as a feature that helps new group members follow conversations by viewing recent chat history.
The company is also testing the possibility of subscription packages that would place some advanced features behind a paid service.
