WhatsApp Username Feature Launches Globally, Allowing Users to Hide Phone Numbers
WhatsApp has officially opened username registration globally, providing a new layer of privacy by allowing users to communicate without revealing their personal phone numbers. Previously, a phone number was the sole identifier for accessing and contacting an account. With this update, users can create a unique public identity, similar to systems used by other instant messaging and social media platforms. According to the official announcement, once a username is activated and shared, others can find and message the user solely through that name, with the phone number remaining hidden if privacy settings are properly configured. This feature is particularly useful for interactions within online communities, communication with colleagues or business partners, and online transactions, reducing concerns about personal numbers being shared with unwanted parties. A phone number is still required for account registration and internal security, but it will no longer be displayed publicly if a username is chosen. Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters, can include lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, and must be unique. They can be changed at any time, though the previous name will become available for others to claim. To set a username, users should update WhatsApp to the latest version, navigate to Settings, select Account, then Username, and enter their desired name. The system will check its availability before allowing the user to save it. The feature is optional and is being rolled out in stages, so it may take several days or weeks to appear for all users in Indonesia. WhatsApp does not provide a public searchable directory of usernames, meaning someone must know the exact username to find an account, helping to minimise unwanted messages.
