WhatsApp Develops Incognito Mode for Meta AI: Could Chats Be More Secure?

Meta has introduced a new feature called Incognito Chat on WhatsApp, a private conversation mode specifically for interacting with the Meta AI chatbot. This feature arrives in response to user privacy concerns, as many individuals frequently share sensitive information, such as health, financial, and personal matters, with AI assistants.

Incognito Chat is built upon a Private Processing system that is claimed to be inaccessible to anyone, including Meta itself. User conversations will be processed within a secure environment, are not saved by default, and are automatically deleted once the chat session ends. “Incognito Chat with Meta AI is truly private, meaning no one, not even Meta, can read your conversations,” Meta stated in its official announcement on Wednesday (14/05/2026).

To use the feature, users simply need to open a conversation with Meta AI on WhatsApp and select the available Incognito Chat option on the chat page. The private mode will automatically end when the application is closed, the phone is locked, or the user exits the conversation.

However, in its initial stage, Incognito Chat only supports text-based conversations. Users are not yet able to upload or generate AI images in this mode. Meta has also implemented several security restrictions to ensure the chatbot does not respond to dangerous or inappropriate requests, and requires users to be at least 13 years old to access the feature.

This feature will be rolled out gradually on WhatsApp and the Meta AI application over the coming months. Meta is also preparing a ‘Side Chat’ feature, an AI assistant that can assist users during WhatsApp conversations without interrupting the main chat thread.
