WhatsApp Accounts Suddenly Blocked: Here's How to Secure and Restore Them

A number of WhatsApp users in various countries, including Indonesia, have reported their accounts being suddenly blocked. This phenomenon is not an isolated case but a wave of blocks that began occurring in early August 2026. Cybersecurity expert Alfons Tanujaya from Vaksincom noted that many users received notifications such as ‘This account can’t use WhatsApp’ or that their account was ‘under review’ without prior warning or clear explanation. He suspects the primary cause is a false positive in Meta’s automated anti-spam system, rather than a mass hacking attempt, though he noted a small number of cases may involve actual account takeovers used for spreading spam. The issue is thought to be linked to a transition involving username features and device activity, such as using WhatsApp Desktop or frequently switching devices. Meta confirmed the problem, stating that while they continuously work to prevent misuse, errors in the system’s assessment can occur, and they are taking steps to restore affected accounts as quickly as possible. Vaksincom advises users whose accounts are blocked not to panic, delete the app, or re-register their number. Instead, they should use the in-app ‘Request a Review’ button and wait for the process, which typically takes 12 to 24 hours. To secure accounts and prevent future blocks, users are urged to activate two-step verification, regularly check and log out unrecognised linked devices, avoid sending mass broadcasts, and refrain from using modified versions of WhatsApp such as GB WhatsApp.
