What is UI's Talent Scouting Pathway, Spotlighted After the Case of Participant Status Changes?
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The talent scouting pathway at the University of Indonesia (UI) has come under the spotlight following a case of changing participant admission status, where some were initially declared passed and then changed to failed.
This controversy is likely to raise public questions about what exactly the talent scouting pathway used in the university’s admission selection in the Depok area entails.
UI’s Talent Scouting pathway is one of the independent selection routes for the International Special Class (KKI) undergraduate (S1) programmes.
Selection through this pathway does not involve written tests but is based on report card grades and academic achievements.
Prospective students are also required to complete a number of administrative documents, such as a motivation letter, commitment letter, and a valid English language proficiency certificate.
In addition, this pathway covers various study programmes, ranging from health, engineering, economics and business, law, social and political sciences, to computer science.
The UI Student Executive Board, through its @bemui.adkesma account, stated that this pathway is expected to provide clear and comprehensive selection information access for prospective students.
The spotlight on this pathway emerged after a system disruption during the announcement of selection results.
UI stated that there was a discrepancy in the display of admission status for 40 minutes.
UI’s Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs, Erwin Panigoro, explained that the system temporarily displayed non-final data.
“This discrepancy occurred within a 40-minute period after the system displayed non-final data,” Erwin said in an official statement on Wednesday (18/3/2026).
However, UI emphasised that the system has now returned to normal and the displayed results are the final selection outcomes.
“Currently, the system has returned to normal, and the Talent Scouting S1 KKI selection results displayed on the site are the final and official selection results through a fair and transparent process,” he said.
UI has also opened assistance services for participants who need further explanations through official channels.
Going forward, the campus is committed to conducting evaluations to make the selection system more reliable and responsive.
This case serves as an important reminder of the significance of transparency and accuracy in merit-based selection processes like the talent scouting pathway, which heavily relies on public trust in the system used.
