What is the Significance of the Temple of Heaven in China, Visited by Donald Trump and Xi Jinping?

Chinese President Xi Jinping invited US President Donald Trump to a highly sacred site in Beijing, China, on Thursday (14 May 2026). The location was the Temple of Heaven. This visit marked Trump’s state visit to China since his last trip in 2017. Discussions between the two leaders covered economic cooperation and the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by the BBC on Friday (15 May 2026). So, is there special significance to visiting the Temple of Heaven in Beijing? “In 2017, we visited the Forbidden City, traversing Beijing’s Central Axis. The Temple of Heaven we are visiting today is of the same age as the Forbidden City, embodying the meaning of ‘a round heaven and a square earth’, and showcasing the Chinese people’s view of the universe and their philosophy of life,” explained Xi, as reported by Antara. Upon viewing the main building of the Temple of Heaven, there is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, which is circular in shape and symbolises the heavens. Meanwhile, the courtyard and outer walls of the building are square, representing the earth. This combination is said to illustrate the harmony between space and time in traditional beliefs. The temple building has three levels, symbolising the relationship between heaven, humanity, and earth. All must operate in harmony for the world to remain peaceful and orderly. The Temple of Heaven has stood for more than 600 years, located about four kilometres south of the Great Hall of the People. Together with the Forbidden City and Tiananmen, this temple forms an important part of Beijing’s Central Axis. This area is the primary heart of tourism and history in China’s capital. In the past, according to Xi, ancient Chinese rulers held sacrificial ceremonies at this site. “Ancient Chinese rulers conducted sacrificial ceremonies at the Temple of Heaven to pray for national peace and tranquility for the people, as well as good weather and abundant harvests,” said Xi. This is seen as reflecting the traditional thinking that the people are the primary foundation of a country. If that foundation of the people is strong, the country will be very peaceful. Trump is said to have felt that China’s traditional culture is vast and profound. Trump even recalled his visit to the Forbidden City in 2017. This visit took place after more than two hours of lengthy discussions at the Great Hall of the People.
