Small households typically require 1-2 cubic metres capacity, though this varies with occupancy and water usage. Dimensions such as length, width, and depth must be proportionate to optimise sedimentation. Septic tanks usually comprise a settling chamber and an advanced treatment chamber. Retention time is also crucial; effective sedimentation ensures optimal breakdown before effluent enters absorption systems. Installation distance and watertight construction are vital to prevent leaks. Walls and base must be robust to withstand seepage.Septic tanks should include advanced treatment systems like soakage pits or absorption fields to filter wastewater before soil absorption.
