Semarang — With advances in technology, Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) is no longer relying solely on fixed cameras installed at specific points. The police have begun operating Handheld ETLE or portable electronic ticketing devices to reach violations in locations not monitored by fixed cameras. Although both are used for electronic enforcement of traffic violations, static ETLE and Handheld ETLE differ in their field operation systems. ‘Like static ETLE, the results are images of violations. The difference lies in how they are used,’ he told Kompas.com on Friday, 22 May 2026. Christopher explained that the main difference lies in the position and mobility of the device when used by officers in the field. ‘Static ETLE is installed at a fixed location, whereas Handheld ETLE is carried by officers to capture images of violations in the field,’ said Christopher. The advent of Handheld ETLE makes traffic violation enforcement more flexible because officers can reach points not covered by static ETLE cameras. With a combination of static ETLE and Handheld ETLE, the police hope traffic law enforcement can be more optimal while encouraging the public to be more orderly and disciplined when driving on the road.
