What is the Difference Between LRT Jakarta and LRT Jabodebek?

President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially inaugurated the Jakarta LRT Kelapa Gading-Manggarai line in Jakarta on Wednesday (16/09).

“This afternoon, Wednesday, 16 September 2026, by the Grace of God Almighty, I, Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, hereby inaugurate the Jakarta LRT Kelapa Gading-Manggarai line,” said Prabowo during the ceremony.

Prior to the inauguration, Prabowo tested the LRT accompanied by several ministers and the Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung. Following this, Prabowo and Pramono attended the inauguration ceremony at Manggarai Station.

In his speech, Pramono stated that the Jakarta LRT was entirely constructed by the regional-owned enterprise (BUMD) Jakpro and fully funded by the Jakarta Provincial Budget (APBD). He noted that the Kelapa Gading-Manggarai line spans 12.2 km and is expected to transport 80,000 passengers per day.

What is the difference between Jakarta LRT and LRT Jabodebek?

Both Jakarta LRT and LRT Jabodebek are part of the development of rail-based public transport in the Jakarta and surrounding areas. However, they possess several differences, ranging from service coverage and fares to the technology utilised.

Technology and Management

According to the official Jakarta LRT website, this mode of transport serves as a public utility dedicated to supporting community mobility while encouraging the use of environmentally friendly transport. Construction of the Jakarta LRT began on 22 June 2016, coinciding with the anniversary of Jakarta. Following the construction process, Jakarta LRT began public trials in June 2019.

Regarding the fleet, Jakarta LRT trains are produced by Hyundai Rotem from South Korea. One of its technological advantages is the articulated bogie. This technology allows the train sets to follow the track contour when navigating sharp curves, ensuring safe passage. The articulated bogie system is also noted as the first technology of its kind to be implemented in Indonesia through the Jakarta LRT project.

Meanwhile, LRT Jabodebek has a wider service coverage, connecting Jakarta with its surrounding satellite cities, including Bekasi, Depok, and Bogor. LRT Jabodebek services commenced operations in 2023.

Other differences include the electrical systems and rails used. According to the ‘Indonesia Baik’ website, LRT Jabodebek receives power from below via a Third Rail system.

In terms of management, Jakarta LRT is managed by the Jakarta Provincial Government under the regional-owned enterprise PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro). Conversely, LRT Jabodebek is managed by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI. The latter is a national strategic project manufactured by PT INKA Indonesia.

Routes

The next difference between the two is the stations served. The first phase of Jakarta LRT currently has a track length of 5.8 km and accommodates 270 passengers per train. In contrast, the LRT Jabodebek track length reaches 44.3 km and accommodates 1,308 passengers per train.

There are six stations on the Jakarta LRT route: Pegangsaan Dua Depo Kelapa Gading, Boulevard Utara, Boulevard Selatan, Pulomas, Equestrian, and Velodrome.

LRT Jabodebek operates via two lines: the Cibubur line and the Bekasi line. There are 18 stations on the LRT Jabodebek network:

Cibubur Line: Dukuh Atas, Setiabudi, Rasuna Said, Kuningan, Pancoran, Cikoko, Ciliwung, Cawang, TMII, Kampung Rambutan, Ciracas, and Harjamukti.

Bekasi Line: Dukuh Atas, Setiabudi, Rasuna Said, Kuningan, Pancoran, Cikoko, Ciliwung, Cawang, Halim, Jati Bening Baru, Cikunir 1, Cikunir 2, Bekasi Barat, and Jati Mulya.

Fares

For fares, Jakarta LRT is priced at Rp5,000 per single trip, applicable for both short and long distances. Meanwhile, LRT Jabodebek starts at Rp5,000 for the first kilometre, with an additional Rp700 for every subsequent kilometre.

LRT Jabodebek also features different rates during peak hours (Monday - Friday, 06:00 - 08:59 and 16:00 - 19:59), with a maximum fare of Rp20,000. During weekends, public holidays, and off-peak hours, the maximum fare is Rp10,000.

Operating Hours

Jakarta LRT operates daily from 05:30 to 23:00. Similarly, LRT Jabodebek operates daily from 05:00 to 23:27.
