What is the Continuation of the Maung School Programme? Here is the Explanation from the Governor of West Java
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has provided an update on the latest developments regarding the Maung School programme, which was proposed some time ago. He stated that the Maung School will begin operations in the field this year.
“The Maung School will start this academic year; we have already identified the locations, and it will be implemented as a school that accommodates talented children,” he said on Thursday (23/4/2026).
He explained that talented children can enter the Maung School in academic fields as well as non-academic ones such as arts, sports, and creative industries. Dedi is applying the Maung School concept to flagship schools.
“It won’t be newly built; we are upgrading the schools that were previously flagship ones, for example, SMAN 3 Bandung, SMAN 1 Subang, and so on—every regency has its favourite schools. These favourite schools will be the ones filled with children who have achievements,” he said.
He mentioned that his side also plans to add classrooms, incorporate teaching technology, and conduct adequate teacher selections. Applicants will be allowed to register and then undergo selection for academic and non-academic qualifications.
Dedi stated that registration up to attending the Maung School will not incur any fees, meaning it is free. However, his side will communicate with parents of students with high incomes to see if they are willing to contribute.
“We are studying it and communicating; it must not violate regulations,” he said.
Head of West Java Education Office Purwanto said that preparations for the Maung School have reached the stage of discussing technical guidelines in the field. Several preparations for school locations are also being discussed.
“The Maung School is currently being compiled with its technical instructions and guidelines, including what the FPMB is. This is being marathon-ed continuously every day,” he said.
