What is Operation Lion's Roar? Details of Israel-US Air Strike Targets at the Heart of Iran
Israel has officially announced the name of a large-scale military operation against Iran with the codename ‘Lion’s Roar’ (Auman Singa).
According to Channel 12 reports, today’s wave of air strikes targeted the private residences of ministers, military commanders, Defence Ministry installations, intelligence headquarters, and Iranian presidential facilities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly personally selected the operation’s name, which follows the ‘Rising Lion’ operation in June 2025.
Beyond physical bombardment, Iran has also been hit by a wave of cyber attacks that have crippled digital infrastructure. Iran’s semi-official news agency, Fars, reported that several major Iranian news agencies experienced severe operational disruptions. Additionally, several mobile applications widely used by the public have become inaccessible.
Former Israeli intelligence chief Amos Yadlin stated that the primary objective of ‘Lion’s Roar’ is to significantly weaken the regime’s military capabilities and negotiating position.
“You cannot topple a regime from the air alone, but you can limit what they can do,” said Yadlin.
He also added that the strike is likely part of a strategy by US President Donald Trump to force Iran back to the nuclear negotiating table, whilst simultaneously providing tangible support to protest groups seeking to overthrow the regime.
To date, explosions continue to be reported at several strategic locations, whilst airspace in the region has been completely closed to civilian flights.
