What Is Known About the US Plan to Close Its Consulate in Medan
The United States (US) will close five foreign diplomatic missions, including the US Consulate General in Medan, Indonesia. This policy is a rare occurrence. What is the reason behind the decision?
Citing Reuters on Wednesday (5/8/2026), people familiar with the notification said it was sent to several US congressional committees late last week. In the notification, the US State Department said it planned to close its diplomatic posts in St. George’s, Grenada; Nagoya, Japan; Medan, Indonesia; Douala, Cameroon; and Winnipeg, Canada.
The planned closures, which have not been previously reported, represent a rare example of the US shuttering several foreign diplomatic missions in a reduction unrelated to any specific geopolitical event. The move is part of President Donald Trump’s administration’s efforts to streamline efficiency and reduce the size of the US government bureaucracy.
Early last year, during the first months of the Trump administration, the US State Department began preparing to close nearly a dozen foreign diplomatic missions. This was part of Trump’s effort to reshape the US bureaucracy so that it fully aligns with his ‘America First’ agenda.
Asked for comment on Sunday, the US State Department issued a statement that did not confirm the closures. However, it said it was focused on ensuring the country’s diplomatic presence is efficient and effective. The department added that it is committed to following congressional notification procedures.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the cost-cutting measures were necessary to right-size the organisation, which many conservatives consider too large and too bureaucratic.
The US diplomatic mission in St. George’s, Grenada, is an embassy. The US missions in Medan, Winnipeg, and Nagoya are consulates, while the post in Douala is an ‘embassy branch office.’ Consulates and branch offices typically represent US interests in regions outside a foreign country’s capital.
Indonesia respects the US decision
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has responded to the US State Department’s plan to close five foreign diplomatic missions, including the US Consulate General in Medan, Indonesia. Kemlu believes the policy will not affect diplomatic relations between the two countries.
‘Regarding the question, the Government is monitoring reports about the planned closure of the United States Consulate in Medan. To date, the United States Embassy in Jakarta has not conveyed official information to the Government of Indonesia regarding the plan,’ said Kemlu spokesperson Vahd Nabyl Achmad Mulachela to reporters on Wednesday (5/8/2026).
Vahd said Indonesia respects the internal decisions of the US government, including those governing its diplomatic and consular representation.
‘Indonesia respects the internal decision of the United States Government regarding the arrangement of its diplomatic and consular representation,’ he said.
Vahd believes the US decision will not affect diplomatic relations with Indonesia. Kemlu said relations between the two countries remain strong.
‘The US Government’s decision will not have an impact on the diplomatic relations between the two countries, which have been well established all this time,’ Vahd said.
