The term “homeless media” is currently being widely discussed on social media following a statement from Muhammad Qodari, Head of the Indonesian Government Communication Agency (Bakom). Qodari explained that Bakom is partnering with the New Media Forum as part of the national digital media ecosystem to broaden the reach of public communication in Indonesia.

He stated that the presence of new media players reflects the government’s efforts to reach the public more extensively, not only through conventional media but also through digital channels that have developed alongside changes in technology and society.

“The presence of our new media friends reflects Bakom’s efforts to reach the public as widely as possible, not only through conventional media but also through digital channels that today have become a reality of media or digital communication reality as a form of technological and societal social development,” said Qodari during a press conference in Jakarta, quoted on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

Qodari said the New Media Forum is a collaborative platform for several digital media players who were previously known as homeless media and are now transforming into new media entities.

So, what is homeless media? According to various sources, homeless media is a type of media that uses social media as a platform to convey information. If the social media platform they operate on is closed, the existence of that media could also disappear.

Unlike conventional media, homeless media does not operate with a clear editorial structure, deadlines, or correction mechanisms. Information moves from one platform to another, undergoing re-interpretation, distortion, or even emotional amplification without pause.
