What happened to Suteja?
What happened to Suteja?
Thank you for the informative article in The Jakarta Post,
Oct. 3, on the 1965 unrest. I cannot find the answer to what
happened to someone of interest to me.
I married into the family (since divorced) of Suteja who was
the first governor (local Bali history discredits that) of Bali.
Suteja was the son of the king of Jembrana regency, Bali.
Governor Suteja had many sons/daughters who are all in their
fifties and sixties now. One son tells me Suteja and his daughter
were playing tennis in Denpasar in September 1965. His driver
informed him he had to go somewhere. That's the last they ever
saw of him.
The family always said he was in exile sending money every
month. I believe they were afraid of the truth. Or some said he
had another family.
His wife never received a pension because of his political
leanings. I have seen many photos of Suteja/Sukarno together. It
seemed Sukarno was charmed by the bright dynamic Suteja (vice
versa). I have heard horrific stories of the brutality in Bali in
1965. The mayor of Negara (capital of Jembrana) was tied dead on
the front of a car and paraded through the streets. They say the
rivers were literally red in Bali. If anyone protested a friend
being killed or taken away he would also be killed on the spot.
Guess my real question is: what happened to Suteja? Was he
killed? Is he alive? Or is he just a person who vanished and no
one knows what happened to him?
If you have any answers I would be very appreciative.
