The use of artificial intelligence (AI) for daily needs has become commonplace. In Indonesia, AI is utilised for various purposes. So, what do Indonesians most frequently use AI for?

Indonesian behaviour in using AI was monitored in the annual Internet Penetration and Usage Behaviour Survey 2026 conducted by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII).

The survey took place between 1 February and 15 March 2026, with respondents being Indonesian citizens aged 13 and above. A total of 8,700 participants were proportionally distributed across 38 provinces, using face-to-face interviews with a margin of error (MoE) of ±1.1%.

The survey revealed AI users across various age groups. Gen Z (13-28 years) comprised the largest share at 29.4%, followed by Millennials (29-44 years) at 16.7%, Gen X (45-60 years) at 7.5%, and Baby Boomers (61-79 years) at 0.8%.

Indonesians primarily use AI for entertainment, such as generating videos or images. The breakdown is as follows:

  • AI for entertainment (generative video or images): 36.5%

  • AI for education and research (chatbots, summaries, academic use): 30.2%

  • AI for work/productivity (automated writing, copywriting, data analysis): 26.9%

  • Digital voice assistants (Siri, Google Assistant, Bixby, etc.): 6.4%

When broken down by generation, 44.4% of Gen Z use AI for entertainment, followed by 34.2% of Millennials and 33.3% of Gen X, while Baby Boomers reported 100.0%.
