What Did Vice President Gibran Do in Papua?
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka toured Mimika and Nabire, Central Papua, on Monday (20/4/2026). Upon arriving at Douw Aturure Airport in Nabire, Gibran was seen wearing a long-sleeved white shirt paired with a traditional Papuan noken bag and a local customary hat known as Mahkota Cendrawasih. As soon as he disembarked from the plane, Gibran immediately checked the condition of Douw Aturure Airport, which has been fully operational for the past two years. So, what did Gibran do during his visit to Papua? Gibran inspected the Niaga Pier at Nabire Port in Teluk Kimi District, Nabire Regency, Central Papua. His arrival was to ensure the port infrastructure’s readiness in supporting the smooth distribution of logistics in Central Papua. According to the Deputy President’s Secretariat, this activity is part of implementing President Prabowo Subianto’s directives, which emphasise strengthening connectivity and transportation infrastructure, including ports, as the backbone of goods distribution and equitable development in eastern Indonesia. Upon arriving at the location, Gibran received a brief explanation from the Head of the Class II Nabire Port Service Unit Office, Ewanggen Kokoya, who revealed that the current pier length is around 227 metres with a width of 12 metres, while the ships served range from 144 metres to 177 metres in length. This condition causes limited berthing space, so when a passenger ship docks, cargo ships must wait outside as simultaneous berthing is not possible. Gibran then directed the Central Papua regional government to prepare directed and sustainable development planning, utilising the existence of Nabire Port as the main hub for economic growth. This planning is expected to integrate the development of the logistics, trade, and inter-regional connectivity sectors, so that the benefits of port development can be optimally felt by the wider community and drive comprehensive regional progress.
