What Day is Eid al-Fitr 2026? Government Prediction and Muhammadiyah Schedule
The Ministry of Religious Affairs will convene an isbat session to formally determine Eid al-Fitr 2026 or 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah. The session will be held at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium at the Ministry of Religious Affairs headquarters in Jakarta.
The government previously predicted Eid al-Fitr 2026 would fall on Saturday, 21 March 2026, based on the joint decree of three ministers on national holidays and shared leave for 2026 and the Indonesian Hijriah Calendar 2026 issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. However, the public has been advised to await the results of the isbat session as the authoritative reference for determining Eid al-Fitr 2026 or 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah.
Prediction by BRIN Researcher: Eid al-Fitr on 21 March
Thomas Djamaluddin, a researcher at the Space Research Centre of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), predicted that Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah could fall on 21 March 2026. His prediction is based on astronomical calculations regarding the position of the hilal (crescent moon).
Thomas explained that astronomically, at sunset on Thursday (19 March) in the Southeast Asian region, the hilal’s position does not meet the new MABIMS criteria (the ministers of religious affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore). This is evident from the calculation map, which still crosses the Central Asian region.
“Astronomically, at sunset on 19 March 2026 in the Southeast Asian region, the hilal does not meet the new MABIMS criteria, as shown on the yellow curve crossing Central Asia,” Thomas told reporters on Tuesday (10 March 2026).
The MABIMS criteria, established since 2021/2022, specify that the start of the Islamic month is determined if the hilal’s altitude is at least 3 degrees and the elongation is 6.4 degrees.
Based on these conditions, Thomas estimated that 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah would fall on 21 March 2026. However, he stated that the final decision on Eid al-Fitr’s date must await the isbat session’s ruling.
“Therefore, 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah falls on 21 March 2026, pending the isbat session’s decision,” he added.
Muhammadiyah’s Eid al-Fitr 2026 Schedule: Friday, 20 March
