WFH for Civil Servants Takes Effect: Ministry of Finance Empty, Coordinating Ministry for the Economy Remains 50% On-Site
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Work from home (WFH) for one day per week for civil servants (ASN) officially takes effect starting Friday (10/4/2026). This flexible work policy is newly implemented, considering that Friday (3/4/2026) was a public holiday commemorating the death of Jesus Christ. Head of Communication and Information Services Bureau at the Ministry of Finance, Deni Surjantono, stated that starting today, the work from home (WFH) policy is enforced every Friday for employees within the ministry. “Starting today, every Friday the Ministry of Finance implements WFH, except for employees on official duties,” Deni said when confirmed by Kompas.com on Friday. However, the WFH policy does not apply to employees carrying out specific official duties, such as face-to-face services, accompanying leadership, and other tasks determined based on proposals from Echelon I units or non-echelon organisational units after coordination with the General Secretariat. Based on Kompas.com’s observations at the Ministry of Finance, security teams to frontliners were still on standby at the Djuanda building of the Ministry of Finance this morning and did not engage in WFH. The corridors on the second floor appeared dark and empty of workers. One security team member with initials AP (40) said that indeed since morning, only a handful of Ministry of Finance ASN were working from the office. “The directive is that everyone here is WFH, only the security and support teams remain on standby as usual,” said Ministry of Finance security team AP (40) when met at the Ministry of Finance on Friday (10/4/2026). A different situation was observed at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs office. One staff member with initials BR (30) said that the directive from the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy requires only 50 percent of ASN to do WFH. The rest still come to the office as usual. “Here, it’s still 50 percent WFH. Except for the security team, everyone comes to the office fully, no WFH,” he said to Kompas.com at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy. Work activities at the Ministry headed by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto continue normally. The night before, on Thursday (9/4/2026), Airlangga said that he would do WFH and would not come to the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy office on Friday (10/4/2026). “If I WFH, if you want to come here, please, but I’m WFH,” he said on Thursday (9/4/2026).
