WFH for Civil Servants Every Friday Officially Takes Effect Today: Note the Excluded Sectors
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The work-from-home (WFH) policy every Friday for civil servants (ASN) officially takes effect on Friday (10/4/2026). Although applied to ASN in ministries/institutions up to local governments, several sectors are excluded from the policy. In a press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026), the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian revealed that certain sectors require the physical presence of personnel due to their direct relation to basic societal needs. “Then waste cleanliness, population affairs, licensing, health, education, regional revenue, and other public services,” Tito explained during the press conference, quoted on Friday (10/4/2026). Besides several public service sectors, echelon I and II officials in regions, district heads, sub-district heads/village heads, and public service sectors are excluded from the WFH policy. At the provincial level, high-ranking officials in madya and pratama leadership positions are still required to work from the office despite the WFH policy for ASN. “So including leaders at the provincial level, for example, high-ranking madya echelon one positions, then echelon two pratama,” Tito stated. They must be present directly at the office to ensure government coordination and public services are not disrupted. Besides structural officials, several public service units are also not included in the every-Friday work-from-home policy for ASN. The implementation of WFH for ASN every Friday is one of the government’s policies to save or achieve efficiency, particularly related to energy following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.
