Western Media Spotlight on Shooting of American Pilot by Papua Separatists

The shooting of an American pilot by Papuan separatists has drawn the attention of Western media, including outlets from the United States. The US news agency Associated Press reported the incident with the headline, “Papua separatists claim to have shot dead a US pilot who transported Indonesian troops.” AP cited a spokesperson for the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), who claimed responsibility for killing pilot Nicholar F Goseli and setting fire to the small aircraft operated by PT AMM. The plane was reportedly carrying the pilot and seven passengers. “An evacuation team attempted to reach the location on Thursday but turned back due to bad weather,” said military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wirya Artadiguna. Authorities planned to try again on Friday morning. Papuan police stated they are still working to verify the condition of the pilot and the seven passengers. Spokesperson Yusuf Sutejo said their efforts are being hampered by the terrain, as there is no road access and the area can only be reached by air.
