West Sumatra KAI Prepares 124,672 Seats for School Holiday Travel Surge

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Regional Division II West Sumatra has prepared 124,672 seats for the school holiday transport period from 20 June to 5 July 2026, anticipating a surge in passenger numbers. KAI Head of Public Relations for Divre II West Sumatra, Reza Shahab, stated in Padang on Tuesday that the company is committed to delivering rail journeys that are safe, punctual, comfortable, and affordable during the school holiday season. He noted that public enthusiasm for rail transport continues to rise as it is considered practical, economical, and capable of sparing customers from road traffic congestion. As of Monday, 22 June 2026, a total of 36,200 local train tickets had been sold for departures between 20 June and 29 June 2026. Local tickets can be booked via the Access by KAI application starting seven days before departure. KAI Divre II West Sumatra is maximising services with three mainstay local trains: the Minangkabau Ekspres, Pariaman Ekspres, and Lembah Anai. The Pariaman Ekspres, serving the Pauhlima-Naras route, operates 10 daily trips and is a favourite for reaching Gandoriah Beach. Its fleet offers an affordable fare of Rp5,000 per passenger. Meanwhile, the Minangkabau Ekspres serves the Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) to Pulau Aie route with 12 daily trips, providing a primary option for airport connectivity, particularly for students and holidaymakers. The third service, the Lembah Anai, runs six daily trips between Kayu Tanam and Padang, offering stunning views of hills and countryside. KAI believes the operation of these local trains plays a vital role in supporting regional tourism and the economy. Reza said the fleet readiness reflects KAI’s commitment to facilitating travel for tourism and family visits. This transport mode offers efficiency and comfort, especially given the potential for rising passenger enthusiasm. Ticket bookings are expected to continue increasing throughout the school holiday season, and KAI has assured the availability of excellent service across all operating routes. The enhanced connectivity provided by the three local trains is hoped to ease public movement. Reza added that the local rail network in West Sumatra is integrated, efficient, and environmentally friendly, forming part of KAI’s efforts to support tourism growth and the economic sector. With maximum capacity, KAI is ready to ensure safe and comfortable journeys during the 2026 school holiday period.
