West Sumatra BKSDA Evacuates Sumatran Tiger Caught in Trap Cage in Agam
The West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) evacuated a Sumatran tiger that entered a trap cage after preying on residents’ livestock in Palimbatan, Nagari Pasia Laweh, Palupuh District, Agam Regency.
“The tiger evacuation was carried out at around 10.00 WIB and was completed at 11.45 WIB,” said Head of the Maninjau Region II Conservation Office of West Sumatra BKSDA Ade Putra in Lubuk Basung on Wednesday.
He said the evacuation was carried out by stretcher by West Sumatra BKSDA officers, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the Nagari Youth Patrol Team (Pagari) and local residents, covering a distance of approximately 100 metres from the trap cage to the vehicle location.
The evacuation took place after the protected animal was sedated by a veterinarian from West Sumatra BKSDA.
The tiger was taken to the West Sumatra BKSDA Region I Conservation Section Office in Belakang Balok, Bukittinggi City, for initial treatment or observation.
He added that the tiger is female and of adolescent age, approximately 2-5 years old.
The tiger, with the Latin name Panthera tigris sumatrae, was found to have entered the trap cage installed on Tuesday (11/8/2026) at 19.35 WIB, after appearing several times previously in Palupuh District.
The trap cage was installed after the adolescent female tiger ate two goats belonging to a resident named Afkir Soni (45) on Sunday (9/8/2026).
The location is near a residential area, SDN 10 Angge Palimbatan primary school and SMPN 1 Palupuh junior high school.
Shortly after arriving at the lodging location following the cage installation, the Jorong Palimbatan head reported that the guard of SDN 10 Angge Palimbatan heard the cage door drop.
“Upon receiving the report, we immediately went to the location to confirm and it turned out the tiger had already entered the cage. The cage was installed at around 18.30 WIB, and the tiger entered the cage measuring two metres in length and 90 centimetres in width at 19.35 WIB,” he said.
