West Sumatra BKSDA Deploys Officers After Two Sumatran Tigers Appear in Agam

The West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has deployed officers to handle the emergence of two Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) in Koto Tabang, Nagari Koto Rantang, Palupuh District, Agam Regency, on Tuesday.

Ade Putra, Head of the Maninjau Region II Conservation Resort, stated that officers and the Anak Nagari Patrol Team were sent to the location after a local resident, Mizwar (52), encountered the two tigers. The team was dispatched following reports from Nagari Koto Rantang officials and the Palupuh Police.

The officers are conducting field identification, including interviewing eyewitnesses, searching for tracks, claw marks, and droppings, and investigating the factors that caused the animals to appear. ‘We are conducting day and night patrols at the location of the sighting and around residential areas. Evacuation efforts are not out of the question,’ he said.

The two tigers were spotted earlier on Tuesday at around 7.30 a.m. WIB by a resident heading to his plantation. The encounter was recorded on a mobile phone, and the video subsequently went viral on local social media.

Firman Hidayat, the head of Batu Gadang Hamlet, noted that the sighting location is less than one kilometre from where a female tiger cub named Sabai was caught in a pig snare in early November 2025.
