JAKARTA — During an official visit to the Ministry of Investment/BKPM in Jakarta on Tuesday, 4 June 2025, West Sulawesi Governor Suhardi Duka (SDK) directly presented five strategic natural resource opportunities in West Sulawesi that are ready for development to drive regional economic growth and attract national and global investment.

The warm and constructive meeting was hosted by Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani, with the Deputy Minister and all Ministry Deputies in attendance.

In his presentation, Governor Suhardi Duka stated that West Sulawesi possesses extraordinary natural resources that have yet to be fully exploited. The five key areas of development focus are:

1. Minerals and coal, including rare earth metals and other mining potential that have been highlighted in ESPN forums.

2. Maritime potential, with an estimated 2.2 million tonnes of marine fish per year, of which only approximately 64,000 tonnes are currently being caught. This opens enormous opportunities for investment in both capture fisheries and marine aquaculture.

3. Carbon capture and carbon credits, as part of West Sulawesi's contribution to the global climate change agenda.

4. Cocoa downstream processing and industrialisation, leveraging West Sulawesi's status as one of the nation's cocoa production centres ready to enter the industrial processing stage.

5. Renewable energy potential from hydroelectric power plants (PLTA), with an estimated capacity of up to 500 megawatts (MW), sufficient to support the energy needs of future industrial zones.

"We have come here not merely with data, but also with the readiness to move swiftly. We need partners and facilitation from the central government so that these opportunities can truly deliver significant impact for the people," said Governor Suhardi Duka.

Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani responded positively to the presentation. He affirmed that his ministry stands ready to serve as a facilitator in connecting West Sulawesi's potential with strategic investors, both domestic and foreign.

"The maritime sector in particular is very promising. There are Chinese investors who have already expressed interest in entering immediately. The potential figure of 2.2 million tonnes of fish is extraordinary, and we must help make it a reality so that communities can directly feel the benefits," said Minister Rosan.

The Ministry of Investment will also establish a joint technical team to oversee investment follow-up in West Sulawesi, including developing a thematic and integrated roadmap for potential development.

The meeting marks an important first step in building partnerships between government and the business sector to stimulate West Sulawesi's economy based on local potential. The West Sulawesi Provincial Government hopes that investment realisation can commence in the near future with concrete projects.
