West Manggarai optimises medical facilities to serve 9,000 displaced persons
The West Manggarai Regency Government, East Nusa Tenggara, is optimising the operations of health service posts from regional hospitals to meet the medical needs of more than 9,000 displaced residents affected by the earthquake.
The Regent of West Manggarai, Edistasius Endi, stated that the continuity of medical services is the top priority in emergency handling, amidst the shadows of trauma and limited facilities following the disaster.
“From a total of 36,102 affected individuals, as of last night, approximately 9,000 residents in displacement tents have been served by medical teams,” he said during a visit from the President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas, in Mbeliling on Tuesday.
He confirmed that he has instructed regional hospitals to remain fully operational, treating patients indoors since the first day of the disaster. This decision was made to guarantee patient safety, even though medical personnel initially faced anxiety regarding the potential for aftershocks.
Medical services in West Manggarai are not only targeting local residents but are also facilitating the treatment of referred victims from neighbouring regencies who have suffered severe injuries, such as bone fractures.
“We appreciate the support in the supply of medicines, emergency tent facilities, as well as medical team assistance from various private parties and humanitarian agencies that help maintain the reliability of health services here,” said Edistasius.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that as of 30 August 2026, at 07:00 WIB, the number of earthquake displaced persons in NTT had reached 188,161. The largest concentrations of displaced persons are located in Manggarai and Nagekeo Regencies, as well as East Manggarai, West Manggarai, Ngada, Sikka, and Ende.
BNPB also noted that the death toll has reached 111 people since the initial earthquake on 15 August 2026, with total injuries reaching 1,631, consisting of 223 severe injuries and 1,408 minor injuries.
House damage has reached 95,567 units, detailed as 46,161 lightly damaged houses, 21,992 moderately damaged houses, and 27,414 heavily damaged houses.
From that total, the West Manggarai Regency Government recorded 36,102 local residents affected, originating from 7,777 households.
Furthermore, 10,757 houses have experienced damage across light, moderate, and heavy categories. Notably, 152 of these damaged houses belong to residents of Cunca Wulang Village, Mbeliling District, which is also an area receiving assistance from PT Freeport Indonesia.
