West Lombok DPRD Prepares Regional Regulation on Quran Teachers, Focusing on Incentives and Protection
The West Lombok Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) is preparing a Regional Regulation (Perda) on the Protection and Empowerment of Quran Teachers in West Lombok. Deputy Chair of Commission I of the West Lombok DPRD, Hendra Harianto, stated that the Perda aims to provide legal certainty while improving the welfare of Quran teachers. He noted that the regulation is currently in the socialisation phase with the public and is targeted for approval in the near future. “The aim is to provide legal certainty and protection for Quran teachers in West Lombok,” said Hendra on Tuesday (5/5/2026). According to him, the majority of Quran teachers teach at Al-Quran Learning Centres (TPQ) voluntarily without pay. Their activities are driven more by a spirit of service than as a profession with welfare guarantees. “When it comes to salaries, there are none. They mostly serve devotedly. At most, there is appreciation from the community, such as when students graduate,” explained the Chair of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Faction in the West Lombok DPRD. He explained that this Perda will serve as the legal basis for the West Lombok Regency Government (Pemkab) to provide incentives to Quran teachers. “We want to affirm that Quran teaching activities are positive and must be protected by the government. So Quran teachers do not need to worry about external matters that could disrupt their activities,” said Hendra. In addition to protection, the Perda will mandate the West Lombok Pemkab to empower Quran teachers, including providing facilities and infrastructure to support the quality of Al-Quran education in the community. “We encourage welfare improvements through incentives, operational assistance, and capacity development, including more modern teaching methods,” added Hendra. The draft Perda also plans for the establishment of a forum for Quran teachers across West Lombok as a channel for communication with the Pemkab. “There will be something called the Quran Teachers Forum. So that communication between the government and them is smooth,” he emphasised.
