West Lampung Develops Grade A Garlic Commodity

The West Lampung Regency Government has commenced a garlic planting trial since 16 April 2026, with the harvest planned for 12 August 2026. West Lampung Regent Parosil Mabsus stated that sample monitoring at 88 days after planting showed encouraging results, with bulb diameters reaching 37.3 cm, nearly 4 cm, thus approaching the Grade A standard. “This is proof that West Lampung’s soil is capable of producing quality garlic. Therefore, we have great potential to become a garlic cultivation centre in Lampung Province,” he said. Parosil explained that based on potential mapping, West Lampung has a total area of 870 hectares suitable for garlic cultivation. For 2026, through the horticultural food security programme, the West Lampung Regional Government is targeting planting on 40 hectares. “The land is spread across four sub-districts: Balik Bukit, Sukau, Way Tenong, and Sekincau. This 40-hectare target is an initial step; if the results are good, we will push for expansion to all potential areas,” he said. The Regent noted that the programme’s success would not only impact food security but also increase farmers’ incomes and strengthen the regional economy. He added that West Lampung has geographical advantages highly suitable for garlic cultivation, with altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,200 metres above sea level, cool temperatures, and fertile soil. Meanwhile, Lampung Regional Police Chief Inspector General Helfi Assegaf expressed full support for the garlic development programme. The West Lampung Regency Government is collaborating with the Lampung Regional Police to support the government’s food security programme, focusing on developing garlic cultivation potential.
