West Java's Human Development Index Reaches 75.90 Points in 2025, All Components Improve

The Human Development Index (HDI) of West Java reached 75.90 points in 2025. This achievement also recorded the highest growth in the last five years, amounting to 1.31 percent in 2025. On average, West Java’s HDI growth during the 2021–2025 period reached approximately 0.99 percent per year.

Head of BPS West Java, Margaretha Ari Anggorowati, stated that the acceleration in HDI growth was supported by improvements in all its constituent components, namely Life Expectancy (UHH), Mean Years of Schooling (RLS), Expected Years of Schooling, and Real Per Capita Expenditure.

In 2025, West Java’s UHH reached 75.53 years, meaning a baby born in 2025 is expected to live up to 75.53 years. This figure increased by 0.37 years compared to the UHH in 2024, or experienced a growth acceleration of 0.49 percent compared to the previous year. Over the last five-year period (2021-2025), UHH experienced an average growth of 0.39 percent per year.

“The health indicators that shape life expectancy have improved. Among them, the percentage of households with access to adequate drinking water sources increased by 0.94 percentage points, and the percentage of households without proper defecation facilities decreased by 0.50 percentage points compared to the previous year,” said Margaretha on Sunday.

The next component forming the HDI is the knowledge dimension. This dimension measures educational attainment through two main indicators: Expected Years of Schooling (HLS) and Mean Years of Schooling (RLS).

West Java’s HLS reached 13.02 years. This means that a child aged 7 years in 2025 in West Java is expected to undergo education for 13.02 years, or up to the first year of tertiary education. HLS increased by 0.22 years, or 1.72 percent, compared to the previous year.

“This rate has accelerated and is the highest during the 2021–2025 period. During that period, West Java’s average HLS grew by 0.80 percent per year,” said Margaretha.

Meanwhile, West Java’s RLS during the 2021–2025 period showed a consistently increasing trend. The RLS achievement for West Java in 2025 was 9.14 years. This means that the average resident of West Java aged 25 years and above completed their education up to around grade IX, or the equivalent of completing junior high school. This achievement experienced a fairly high growth acceleration of 3.04 percent compared to the previous year.
