Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, stated that the project to reactivate railway lines, spanning 12,000 km, will begin in West Java. “It seems that we will prioritise the area in West Java,” he said at Gambir Station on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

In addition to West Java, Dudy Purwagandhi said the government plans to reactivate railway lines in Banten. However, he said that the plan for reactivation in the area has not yet been included in the government budget.

Reactivation of railway lines is a desire of President Prabowo Subianto. The head of state wants to reactivate railway lines up to 12,000 km.

The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), said that the reactivation aims to support the transport of goods and passengers carried out by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI.

This reactivation will continue from the total railway lines that are currently active, which is around 7,000 km. “Hopefully, it can further increase the mobility and transportation of the community, including goods and services,” he said at a press conference at Gambir Station, Jakarta, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

AHY said that the transport of goods by rail is a priority, especially since rail services can reduce the volume of vehicles on the roads.

With the reactivation, the economy is expected to be more productive and costs will be more efficient. “The cost of logistics transportation also depends on the availability of railway lines and freight trains,” he said.

The President Director of KAI, Bobby Rasyidin, said that this reactivation is to reduce congestion on existing lines. In the future, the railway lines to be activated will start from Cianjur to Bandung, then Bandung Selatan through Soreang to Ciwidey. “Maybe we will initially target around 500-600 km,” said Bobby.

The reactivation project will begin this year with a target of 12,000 km. KAI is also anticipating the density of railway lines which are also used by motor vehicles and the mobility of the surrounding community.
