West Java thriumps in Coke Cup
JAKARTA (JP): West Java thrashed Maluku 4-0 to win Group D of the National Coke Cup Under-15 soccer tournament in Surabaya yesterday. Aceh was the group's runner-up, routing West Kalimantan 6-0.
Jakarta topped Group C yesterday, drubbing South Sulawesi 6-0. West Sumatra, another Group C team, crushed North Sulawesi 4-0 to clinch the runner-up position.
Their resounding victory, however, did not get West Sumatra into the top six teams advancing to the second round. Central Java, after playing a goalless match against West Sumatra the day before, had already made it to the second round.
Yesterday matches played at the Brawijaya and Simomulyo pitches marked the end of the qualifying round that began last Wednesday. The second round will also be played in Surabaya on Sept. 1.
Teams advancing to the second round will be split into two groups.
The first group, Group K, will consists of Jakarta, Aceh and East Java. The second group, Group L, groups West Java, South Sulawesi and Central Java.
West Java will take on South Sulawesi and defending champion East Java will challenge Aceh. The annual soccer meet is sponsored by Coca-Cola. (arf)
