West Java Shaken by 136 Earthquakes in May 2026
The Bandung Class 1 Geophysical Station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 136 earthquakes in West Java and surrounding areas during May 2026. The strongest tremor measured 4.6 on the magnitude scale.
“Of the 136 recorded events, the largest earthquake measured 4.6 magnitude and the smallest 0.8,” said BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station Chief Edi Wibowo in Bandung on Monday, June 1, 2026.
Regarding depth, he added, 121 earthquakes occurred at less than 60 kilometres depth and 15 between 60 and 300 kilometres. “Eleven earthquakes were felt during May,” he said.
As for the hypocentre locations, 65 earthquakes originated offshore, while 71 occurred on land.
Edi further stated that one of the felt earthquakes in May had a magnitude of 4.6, centred in Pangandaran Regency, West Java, on May 21, 2026, and was felt in Garut, Ciamis, and Tasikmalaya regencies.
“Considering the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, the earthquakes were shallow events caused by active fault activity,” he said.
BMKG Bandung advised the public to avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by earthquakes. If an earthquake occurs, he urged people to remain calm, stay vigilant, follow local Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) instructions, and heed BMKG updates.
“We urge the public to remain calm, vigilant, and not be swayed by irresponsible rumours in the event of an earthquake,” said Edi Wibowo.
