West Java Sends Largest Number of Homebound Travellers as Free Mudik Programme Departs
West Java province contributed the largest number of homebound travellers during this year’s Eid mudik season. This was announced by West Java Deputy Governor Erwan Setiawan whilst departing free mudik programme participants alongside the state-owned defence industry holding DEFEND.ID, in front of Gedung Sate in Bandung city on Tuesday (17 March).
Erwan explained that the number of homebound travellers from West Java reached approximately 21 per cent of the national total. “This year’s mudik from West Java is the largest implementation of homebound travel. Approximately 30 million residents of West Java are undertaking mudik,” said Erwan.
According to him, population movement dynamics in West Java during the Eid al-Fitr period were highly significant. On one hand, 30 million people left West Java, whilst approximately 25 million people entered the region.
“Thus there was a net population decrease of approximately 5 million people in West Java during Eid,” he said. The free mudik programme facilitated 34 buses for the free mudik initiative.
Of these, 19 buses departed directly from Gedung Sate with a total of 950 members of the general public. According to Erwan, this programme represented a concrete step in minimising the risk of traffic accidents that frequently plague the mudik tradition.
“Certainly this reduces the risk of accidents. Alhamdulillah, from several implementations of free mudik, both from the provincial government and companies, it has proceeded safely, smoothly, and reached destinations without incident,” he said.
The destination cities in this joint mudik programme included various areas in Java and Sumatra, such as Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, Palembang, and Lampung. Furthermore, Erwan requested that homebound travellers remain focused on maintaining health and safety during their journey.
Additionally, he also issued a stern appeal for residents not to bring relatives when returning to their home town unless they had job certainty. “Do not bring relatives who might become a burden here. Unless there is definitely employment available. It would be unfortunate if they later became a burden here,” he said.
