The West Java Provincial Government has begun organising the Jatinangor area as an integrated education district, “Student City Jatinangor,” to bolster its function as a centre for higher education. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi (KDM) in Sumedang on Sunday stated that the provincial government has prepared concrete steps for this reorganisation as an integrated educational zone. “The provincial government is fully prepared to organise it, and it will become a new zone, namely an education zone or, in my words, Student City Jatinangor,” he said. He explained that the organisation must be designed jointly with university leaders to formulate an integrated development concept for the zone. “So I have asked the university colleagues at that time to formulate it together because it is an education zone, thus formulating together how to organise that zone as an integrated education zone,” Dedi stated. He noted that the presence of several universities makes Jatinangor a strategic node for higher education in West Java, with diverse disciplines from engineering, government, to social sciences that complement each other in one zone. Dedi added that the government is ready to support the financing needed in the process of organising the Jatinangor zone. “I asked the rectors, please gather, please formulate that zone together. Then we will calculate the financing,” he added. In line with that, the West Java Provincial Government assesses that the organisation should not only touch on academic aspects but also include spatial organisation, infrastructure, and the zone’s mobility system so that educational activities can run more safely and efficiently. KDM emphasised that one issue that must be addressed immediately is the high vehicle activity that often disrupts pedestrian safety, especially students in the campus environment. “Don’t let it be that in a university zone, crossing the road is impossible because of large vehicles. Well, that must be made,” he stressed. Through this organisation, the West Java Provincial Government hopes that West Java can present a modern integrated education zone that is safe and comfortable, so that Jatinangor truly develops as a competitive Student City.
