West Java Police Urge Public to Help Catch Muggers, Warn Against Vigilantism

BANDUNG – West Java Regional Police (Polda Jabar) have stated they will take firm and measured action against muggers (begal) operating in Bandung city and across West Java. They are also inviting members of the public to help catch muggers caught in the act.

“Our first measure is the Regional Police Chief’s order for firm, measured and clear action, and this applies not only to the police but to the public as well,” said the Head of Public Relations at Polda Jawa Barat, Police Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan, on Tuesday (21/7/2026).

He emphasised that the public may take part in dealing firmly and measurably with muggers, on condition that they do not take the law into their own hands. Hendra expressed his gratitude to residents who have been involved in efforts to tackle mugging.

“Members of the public may do so, provided it is, as I said, firm and measured — we do not want any deaths,” he said.

The police will increase the number of personnel on duty from midnight through the early hours, particularly during the holiday period. Hendra said the West Java Regional Police Chief has instructed district police chiefs to anticipate mugging incidents on the ground.
