Police are still investigating the psychological condition of Taufik Hidayat (30) in the case of the confinement and torture of his ex-girlfriend YTR (29). West Java Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan stated that the psychiatric examination of Taufik Hidayat involves experts to further uncover the motive and background of his actions. “Because what he did is something abnormal, outside the usual behaviour of a person. This is sadistic,” Rudi said on Tuesday (23/6) evening. Based on preliminary examination results, Taufik Hidayat was known to have a habit of drinking alcohol. Arguments often occurred when the former debt collector was under the influence of alcohol. “Every time he consumed alcohol, he would argue with his girlfriend. The quarrels then led to abuse,” Rudi said. Taufik was arrested by a joint team from the West Java Regional Police at a housing complex in Ciparay District, Bandung Regency, on Tuesday (23/6) at 18.30 WIB. During his time as a fugitive, Taufik frequently moved locations. “He fled to Tangerang. There he was confused and felt unsafe, then returned to West Java. He was afraid, suspicious of everyone, did not know where to go, until he finally reached Majalaya and was caught,” Rudi said. The suspect’s whereabouts were traced after investigators tracked several activities and transactions made during his escape. “Based on his confession, he was arrested at a friend’s house. He admitted that was his intended destination. We had been following him since this morning. This morning he also made several transactions that gave us clues until we finally managed to arrest him,” he said. YTR was abused and held captive by Taufik Hidayat for three years in his rented room in Cileunyi, Bandung Regency, West Java. The 29-year-old woman suffered severe injuries, including loss of normal vision, a cleft lip, difficulty speaking, and an inability to walk. The abuse case was reported by the family to the West Java Regional Police on Friday, 12 June 2026. YTR’s sister, Melanie Silviani, said the victim is still receiving intensive care at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung. Member of the House of Representatives Commission VIII, Atalia Praratya, revealed YTR’s condition after visiting her at the hospital, stating that the victim’s facial structure was severely damaged, she had lost her eyesight, and suffered serious injuries as a result of the brutal violence during the three-year confinement.
