West Java Police Chief Discusses Criminal Penalties for Taufik Hidayat, Public Urged to Monitor Case
West Java Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan stated that the criminal acts of planned assault and confinement committed by suspect Taufik Hidayat against victim Yuvita Tri Rezeki were sadistic. He stressed that the police would seek the heaviest possible punishment and maximise the articles applied. “We conducted a case review, gathering all four articles and layering them with the recidivist article cumulatively,” he told reporters at the West Java Regional Police Headquarters on Friday (26/6/2026). When asked whether the suspect could face life imprisonment or the death penalty, he urged the public to support and monitor the case so that the perpetrator is prosecuted and sentenced as fairly as possible according to existing legal provisions. He confirmed that the assault and confinement carried out by the suspect were premeditated. The West Java Police Chief stated that the articles applied include Article 466, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 5 years, and Article 451 concerning hostage-taking, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years. Additionally, Article 446, paragraph 2 concerning deprivation of liberty carries a maximum sentence of 9 years, and Article 126, paragraph 2 concerning criminal acts resulting in serious injury carries a maximum sentence of 9 years. He added that the suspect is a repeat offender in a case of violence against his former wife and was sentenced to one year and four months in prison.
