West Java MUI Urges Against Anarchism Amid 'Boti Hunter' LGBT Vigilante Movement
The West Java branch of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has urged the public not to commit anarchic acts against those with deviant LGBT behaviour, in response to the emergence of a ‘boti hunter’ movement. The MUI is calling for these individuals to be provided with guidance so they can be kept away from such deviant behaviour.
‘Perhaps the intention is good, but the method may be less than proper. We are a state of law, a sovereign state. I think the time has not yet come to use anarchic actions like that,’ said West Java MUI Chairman KH Anang Abdussalam on Thursday (9/7/2026).
He suggested providing guidance to those with deviant behaviour, hoping that they would not be further hurt. ‘Our advice is that they are our brothers and sisters. They are merely afflicted with an illness; they need more affection and attention. They need guidance,’ he said.
He stated that deviant LGBT behaviour will bring about punishment or disaster if left unchecked. Therefore, it must be handled collectively so that it can be resolved immediately.
