West Java MUI Responds to Boti Hunter: Do Not Be Anarchic, Prioritise Guidance

In response to the emergence of the Boti Hunter movement, the West Java branch of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has urged the public not to commit anarchic acts against individuals exhibiting LGBT behaviour. The MUI called for them to receive guidance so they can avoid such behaviour.

"Perhaps the intention is good, but the method is less than proper. We are a state of law, a sovereign state of law. I think it is not yet time to use anarchic actions like that," said West Java MUI Chairman KH Anang Abdussalam on Thursday (9/7/2026).

He suggested that guidance be provided to those with such behaviour. In doing so, it is hoped they will not be further hurt. "Our advice is that they are our siblings. They are merely afflicted with an illness; they need more affection and attention. They need guidance," he said.

He stated that LGBT behaviour will bring about punishment or disaster if left unchecked. Therefore, he believes this issue must be addressed collectively.
